Darlene “Dutch” Ann Weenum (Zeier)

January 16, 1955 – August 30, 2025

Memorial Written by Erin Weenum

If you ever met Darlene “Dutch” Weenum, you probably remember it. She had that effect on people. She lived her 70 years with grit, grace, warmth, and a heart that never seemed to run out of space for more people.

We’re thankful you’re here today to remember Dutch’s incredible life with us.

Dutch passed away on August 30, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer. She left us far too soon, but true to form, she did so on her own terms – with dignity, surrounded by the people she loved. In her final days, the hospital room overflowed with an endless parade of visitors; friends, family, neighbors – each one bringing memories, laughter, prayers, and a reminder of just how deeply she was loved.

She was born on January 16, 1955, to Billie Louise and Lewis “Sonny” Zeier and was raised in the ranching town of Ryegate, Montana. Life on the family ranch taught her early how to work hard and love harder. Whether she was helping tend sheep and hogs, helping her grandmother run the local bar, or getting into small town mischief, Dutch did it all with a mix of toughness and tenderness that would come to define her.

After graduating from Ryegate High School, she attended Montana State University. Never one to shy away from adventure, she later moved to Fairbanks, Alaska where she worked on the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. It was a new place, far from home, but she brought her Montana grit and determination with her.

One summer, back home in Ryegate and behind the wheel of her brand-new black T-top Trans Am, she caught the eye of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed ranch hand from Michigan named Vern. She always said the world stopped spinning when they met. Maybe it did, because that moment turned into nearly 43 years of marriage, adventure, and unwavering partnership.

Together, Dutch and Vern built a life rooted in family, hard work, and love. They raised sheep, cattle, and two incredible children – Jarrod Jason and Heather Ann. Theirs was a home full of laughter, open doors, and the smell of something good cooking. They traveled, they hosted, and they built memories that will live on through Jarrod and Heather. When Vern passed, a piece of her heart went with him, but she carried on, just as he would have wanted.

Dutch dedicated over 40 years with the Federal Farm Service Agency in Ryegate, becoming a trusted advisor and tireless advocate for Montana’s agriculture community, before retiring earlier this year 2025. She helped generations of ranchers and farmers navigate federal programs and preserve their way of life.

Perhaps nothing brought Dutch more joy than becoming “Gigi” to her five grandchildren. Her son Jarrod and his wife, Erin, gave her all girls – Lincoln and Remco “Coco” – and with them, she delighted in the girly side of life. There were crafts, baking days, and countless adventures, including unforgettable trips together to Europe, the Caribbean, and New York City. Her daughter Heather and her husband, Erik, gave her all boys – Cael, Kai, and Ari – and with them, she found glimpses of their Papa shining through. She shared in their love for the sheep, for hunting, for the outdoors, and the quiet satisfaction that comes with working the land. Dutch cherished every school concert  and soccer game. She was fully present for all of it – supportive, proud, and deeply connected to each one of them in her own special way.

Dutch also played a central role in the lives of many nieces and nephews, helping raise Tina, Kenny, and Travis Zeier with the same love and devotion she gave her own children. Her door – and her heart – was open, always.

She leaves behind a wide and loyal circle of friends who shared in her life’s milestones, misadventures, and memories. The Ryegate crew she grew up with became her chosen family, and together they shaped not just a town, but a generation. Her story is stitched into theirs, and their support never wavered – even at the end. Among those dear to her are the families of Dale, DeBuff, Streeter, Bruner, Todd, Jeffers, Sherrod, and Knoll – who were by her side in both the brightest and hardest days.

Dutch is preceded in death by her beloved husband Vern, her parents Billie and Sonny Zeier, and her nephews Billie Jo and BJ Zeier.

She is survived by her children Jarrod (Erin) Weenum and Heather (Erik) Gentry; grandchildren Lincoln and Coco Weenum, Cael, Kai and Ari Gentry; her brother Ken Zeier; and sisters Jackie Howard and Penny Stradtman; and many nieces and nephews.

In the end, Dutch left the world just as she lived in it—with courage, love, and an unshakeable devotion to the people she cared for most.

To honor her memory, take a moment to check on a neighbor, call your mom, or take your grandkids out for ice cream. Contributions in her name can be made to Grace Barber Lutheran Church: 17 S Barber Rd, Ryegate, Montana 59074.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 13th at 11:00am at the Ryegate School. The family invites all those who loved Dutch to join them in celebrating her life if they can.

Dutch was one remarkable lady. Tough as nails when she needed to be, but so kind and soft hearted. She adored her family and was a fantastic cook. She was a hard worker. She enjoyed all animals; kittens to lambs.
We had so many good talks. I will miss her dearly, but know that she is back with the love of her life, Vern.
